Spoke to soon

Alas, the puppy we so wanted, that I fell in love with at first sight, that my daughter's dreamed of holding and sleeping by and dressing up and loving, is not to be ours. A puppy we all fell in love with over a picture on the screen. Never meeting her, yet still, she occupied a space in our hearts.

It's a long and complicated story, one that I'm not quite sure I understand. There seemed to be an issue between the rescue organization and the foster mom, a disagreement on what age she should be spayed. And thus, the rescue organization dropped her from their available puppy list.

And so we wait. There will be a puppy out there for us. We're still approved. We've already been offered a 3 1/2 month old male puppy and a 7 month old female puppy, but just not quite what we're looking for.

So what are we looking for? A female, mutt (although we are selective in what breeds) mostly large dog. We know when we see her, that she'll be the puppy for us. She's out there somewhere, and we are willing to wait for her.

The Waiting Game

We're getting a PUPPY! Or at least, I am 99% certain we're getting her. Friday I found the cutest little puppy on pet finder. Tuesday I sent my application in. Yesterday, after some back and forth follow up emails, I received this one:

Hi Whirlwind! I have approved your application and forwarded it to foster mom (puppy's rescuer) Let me know if you don't hear anything back from her within 24 hours. She has been out of town for the last few days and should be getting back into town today, but she does have her laptop with her. If you would like to contact her directly, her email is xxx :) Congratulations!

That was at 11:35 am yesterday. SO needless to say, we're all waiting. The girls woke up this morning and the first thing they asked is "Did we get her? Is the puppy ours?" When I told them I thought so and I'm just waiting to hear back from the foster mom, Einey said "We probably didn't get her." She's such a pessimist.

We've talked about a puppy for the last few years. But it never felt right. Not really looking last week, I just did a quick search of local and she popped up. it was love at first sight. I almost sent in an application without talking to the Husband. She's 6 week old mixed bread like our current dog. She's a rescue and while it popped up on our local pet finder, she's actually two states away (not sure how that works, we got our current dog from the local pound).

We're excited. And nervous - puppy's are alot of work. But I'm home almost every day with nothing else to do. And we're ready. The girls are ready. The timing is perfect. We warned the girls that they will have to make sure they pick up after themselves (they kind of slack in that department). That the puppy will eat toys. Moe was concerned at that. I think having a puppy may teach my girls how to be a bit neater and clean up after themselves, even if a few small toys are harmed in the process.

And so we wait. It's currently 9:43 am and the only word I have heard from the foster mom was a forwarded email with a picture that says "we also have this 7-8 month old puppy you might be interested in". The waiting is the hard part.

Helping Hands

We've all got them. Little hands always there willing to help. Some of us have two, others have four, six or even more. These are the hands that are always there, helping put away food, usually into their mouths as you are unloading your grocery bags, helping with laundry by scattering it around your house and even helping with dishes (no explanation needed here).

While I appreciate the hands that help make their beds, put their laundry away, clean up their toys and clear the dishes*, its the other aforementioned hands I can do without.

Where's this all coming from?

The other afternoon, Meenie had a play date with some friends from school. While I was clearing their lunch dishes, the girls escaped upstairs. Moe was quietly sitting with the dog. And a bottle of lavender scented hand soap. Washing the dog. In the middle of my bed. Have I mentioned the dog is big and I had no way of getting her into the tub, so I had to deal with sponging her off?

Those types of helpful hands I could do without.

* The girls are great. They usually do all the above without any compensation. We do not believe in paying them for small household chores that they should be capable of doing themselves anyway. It's just expected.

Male Dominance

Yesterday we picked up two new lizards. The girls thought that Charizard needed a new friend. So we picked up two more green anoles, which were quickly named Charmeleon and Charmander. The girls were very excited. However, almost immediately after we put the two new anoles in the tank, they started fighting. It seems like Charizard is a ,ale and so is Charmander. They were puffing their dulaps, bobbing their heads, charging and biting each other. Charmeleon would just run away. We believe she is a female. We had to separate the two males after letting them duke it out for a few hours. Hopefully, they will let me return the little guy.

The thing that irks me, is I specifically asked at the pet shop about males fighting for dominance over the cage and they told me they have never had any problems (I must note however, it was a younger kid and not the person we usually deal with at the pet shop).

Overall, the other two seem to be getting along well.

Note to self: Having two male lizards will only result in a pissing match.

Best mini trip ever

I know I've mentioned our little jaunts to the small pet store in town before. We are frequent customers as we need to pick up crickets 1 to 2x per week to feed the lizards (which, btw, we are contemplating getting more of). Over the past six months we've been frequenting this place, the kids have really come to enjoy our small trips. And of course, the owner/workers have come to recognize us as well.

On normal trips, we go in, browse the animals. The girls like to see what's new or what's been sold. They talk to Jake the Parrot. They stand and watch the high school students who come in to change the cages. One morning, when it was just Moe and I, she stood there for a half an hour watching a girl put together a fresh cage, pull out rodents to place in the new cage. Clean the old cage and start over. Moe was just fascinated with watching her.

Three weeks ago, their were some baby bunnies, about a month old. The owner looks at the girls and said, "do you want to hold one?" So of course, we stood there for a half hour holding a bunny. In trips since, the girls have watched as one by one the baby bunnies have grown and been sold. There is one left, but it is significantly larger than it was a month ago. To the point that Moe asked "where are all the baby bunnies". The owner, upon hearing this, looks at the girls and says "you want to see baby bunnies? Come here but you have to be real quiet." She led the girls through a back room into another room and there, in the quiet space was a mother bunny and her four newborn babies. They were three days old and still pretty hairless. They were pretty darn cute! The girls of course, loved this little treat.

Within the next year, there will be a big box pet store opening in town, along with other large box stores. Some we are eagerly anticipating (because really, I HATE driving an hour just for Husband to by paintbrushes and other supplies, so thank god they are building an art store!). I just hope that our small pet store will be able to survive when the big one opens. I for one, still plan on visiting our little favorite spot. I know the girls will still prefer their little treats.

Words of Wisdom

Don't leave crickets in your van when it's 6 degrees out.

Yup. I went to get the lizard his food and left it in the van. I now have a dozen frozen crickets. Looks like I need to go back to the pet store.

Edit: Apparently crickets are pretty resilient! I put the bag on the heater vent and after about 10 minutes, they started moving again and flipping over from the "dead and on my back" position.

(FYI. I've now posted three times today, so be sure to check out my other new posts as well)

Meet our new friend....

Last week we were offered a new pet. it's actually something we had discussed in the past and it's current owner didn't want it anymore so we said sure.

New Pet: free Glass Tank: Free
Crickets (1 dozen): $1.06

Reptile lamp: $20.00

Light, water dish, bedding, climbing rock : $75.00

Hearing Moe scream when it jumped out of the tank when we were putting it in: Priceless

So in the end, meet Minty. Err Charmeleon. He is a green anole and fairly easy to take care of. The kids like him. Husband likes him. heck even I like him. Yes I know, he looks brown. That picture was taken RIGHT after he made his made dash for freedom - off the table, along the cabinets, through Moe's flailing legs (she couldn't move fast enough away), 1/2 way up the refrigerator and into a corner. He was a little stressed after his jaunt.

Goodbye Little Friend

Last night, the girls lost a little friend. Rainbow the wonder Hamster passed on to that great rodent space in the sky.

Rainbow was given to the girls three Easters ago, making him roughly 2.5 years old. We knew his time was coming this summer, but it was still hard for the girls.

Over his time on this planet, he only bit Einey once and that was when she squeezed him. He survived the wrath of Moe until he was moved to a better spot high above. He wasn't played with alot, but he still liked to be cuddled when we took him out.

He is now buried beneath the lilac bush in the back yard. He's resting comfortably in his plastic tube (where he went when it was time) inside a sealed little box. Moe keeps asking if we are going to go out and get Rainy when he wakes up. She says "I miss Rainbow". The girls came down with us when we buried him to say goodbye. The each drew a picture and slid it inside his box. The placed flowers onto of his resting space. We found a perfect rock which we are going to clean off and paint as a reminder to our little lost friend.

Goodbye Little Friend, Goodbye....
