The very best gift of all

8 Years ago, Einey gave me the very best Christmas gift ever, the gift of motherhood.

It doesn't seem possible that it was 8 years ago that I held my eldest, as a swaddled newborn in my arms. Now she's a beautiful, smart little girl. We are truly blessed to have her in our lives.

Thank you, Einey for the gift of motherhood.

Happy Birthday to you. May your love continue to shine!

Birth Story

It's my birthday and

oh hey, look at that, it's not my birthday, that was yesterday. I was too busy relaxing and having fun to bother to visit. Sorry guys.

My morning started with my husband bringing me a HUGE caramel Latte and was followed by dropping all three girls off at school. Followed by 3 1/2 hours of peace and quiet. Then pick up one kid followed 2 hours later by picking up the other two. And then we hit the woods in search of fairies. We found a bunch and spent a long time taking a 2 mile hike. It was great. It was this super serene section of the Natchaug (aka Blue Blazed Trail) which ran along side vernal pools and rocky waterfalls. We hiked a mile in, the girls sat on a plank bridge and had a snack and we hiked back out. We found frogs, toads and more frogs. And then, of course, since we felt great after our hike, we stopped for Chinese on the way home. The day ended with a nice big glass of wine.

And cake - it's in the oven now (a day late but who can complain?). Super chocolate cake with chocolate chips, chocolate frosting and espresso ice cream.

Happy Birthday, Einey

Happy birthday, Einey. I still can't believe that you are now seven. No longer a baby nor toddler nor little girl. Recently, we gave you your own room and transformed it from the nursery to a room fit for a tween like you. Your growing up fast, as is evidenced by your tastes in clothes, music and playthings. Sometimes we get glimpses of the little girl you were and other times of the big girl you are yet to become. There are days where it seems like you are stuck in the middle, not sure which way to embrace. But overall, you are a fantastic daughter. You are polite, smart and not afraid to stand up for yourself. This year, you made sure no one forgot that you share a birthday with Jesus. And so, tonight after our Christmas dinner, we will dine on birthday cake. Lemon creme if I recall.

Birthday
To you
To you.

Yesterday was my birthday. We celebrated by inviting a few friends and their kids over for a cookout. It was originally supposed to be a surprise, one Husband has apparently been planning for a month. So earlier this week when I mentioned he was home and we hadn't seen our friends in awhile, and he laughed at me, I knew something was up. He spilled the beans, but no worries. The day dawned nice freaking hot and humid. It was day 2 of a heatwave to hit New England. Can I say that this ALWAYS happens (can anyone remember the baptism of '05? Water balloons and super soaker's). But we made the food and proceeded to celebrate anyway. We sat up chairs in the shade and turned the sprinklers on for the kids. All in all, it was a great day. It was nice and relaxing for me (husband however, was stuck playing cook, even though I tried to help a few times). Flowers (lots of flowers, seeds, cut and uncut), gift certificates, a bird feeder, new sandals (because I busted one pair last week - how convenient and another pair is almost gone), a custom bookmark, a set of postcards and a camcorder! rounded out my gifts. Even the thunderstorm that rolled through (with a nice cooling rain) didn't disrupt the party. I now have alot of plants to get planted, but it's FREAKING HOT, so maybe tonight when it cools down.

I'll leave you with a few quotes from yesterday.

"Mom, why did you invite OUR friends to your party?"
"It's all wet over here" (right where the sprinkler was)
"How old are you again? 26? 27?"
(after the above mentioned song was sung by a chorus of first graders)
"someone may be getting old here, but it's not her"
"If I don't do the dishes tonight, tomorrow won't be your birthday, so that means I'm off the hook, right?"

Thanks to everyone who came to my cookout, called or emailed me birthday wishes yesterday!

On Birthdays...

We celebrated Einey's birthday with her friends this past weekend. To celebrate, we went roller skating at a local skating rink. It's a place that barely changed in the 10 plus years since Husband and I have last been there. And yet, the children had a blast. They didn't care that half the arcade games didn't work or that they could barely stand in the skate. They were trying their hardest and having fun.

Even after numerous times falling down and getting back up, they were all full of smiles. They did the hokey pokey on skates and played the four corners game. It wasn't private, so there were other families there but no one cared.
Of course I have to show of her super cool cake! That's the Pokemon, Manaphy, on roller skates.

Except, it was the first time we had a kids party and Husband didn't enjoy himself. I don't know if it was because he spent most of the time chasing Moe, despite the fact that we had two capable adults invited for the sole purpose of watching her. But he just kind of sulked. He admitted to me later, that it was just a step up from Chuck E. Cheese in his eyes (which to him, is the bottom of the barrel). He also admitted that it brought back memories of being wicked sore after skating. I don't remember this, but apparently he spent alot of time falling while skating in his youth.

Meenie takes after her dad, spending time on her tush. She preferred the carpet to the actual rink.

In the mean time, daughter gushed on and on about how it was her best party evah. And how she wants all her parties there from now on. And how she really wants to go back. So it looks like if we do any playdates, I'll be the one bringing her.

At least Einey had fun, that's all that matters!

Best. Party. Evah!

Please, Please, Please let them be wrong....

Saturday Night
A chance of snow in the evening...then snow... rain and sleet after midnight. Moderate snow accumulation. Lows around 20. Chance of precipitation 80 percent.

Sunday
Rain...snow and sleet with freezing rain likely in the morning...then a chance of snow showers in the afternoon. Additional moderate snow accumulation possible. Highs in the lower 30s. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.

For once, I am hoping and praying that the weather forecasters are wrong. With our luck, it will be the one time they are right!

You see, Einey's birthday party is scheduled Sunday morning. Einey, whose birthday falls on Christmas Day and already at the age of almost six, feels jipped (thankfully she has a great teacher who is helping us to realize that it's a special day... more on that later). Einey whose single biggest fear right now is that her friends won't get to celebrate her birthday with her because they can't come over on Christmas (even though we told her a hundred times her party is not on her birthday). Einey who has been counting down since the first of the month.

I have until Saturday morning to make the call on whether we want to reschedule or try to go ahead with it.

I just hope it's not a repeat of three years ago when I had to cancel Moe's baptism three times and finally in February said "let's do it in June!"

Upside Down Cake

Last night we were celebrating Moe's birthday as a family. I had made her a strawberry cake earlier in the day that Husband used the new dye-pens for cakes to draw her a walrus on an ice berg and stars. Meenie was so excited when we finished dinner that she ran inside. A few minutes later, she returned carrying the cake sideways - when Husband shouted"What are you doing?" she got startled and dropped the cake. Moe was right behind her with the ice cream. Unfortunately, I hadn't taken pictures yet so no one beside Husband and I had seen it. Oh well, the cake still tasted good....

The Rules of Three....

It's no secret that two has been a trying time for us. Moe has been very aggressive for most of it - often targeting kids for no reason. She knows what she's doing and that it's not okay (we talk about it) but it doesn't stop her. It's not an issue with acting out because she doesn't have words to explain it - she's fairly verbal (not so articulate - but enough so I can understand her).

SO this morning when she woke up, we snuggled in my bed for a bit and discussed the new rules she needs to abide by now that she's three.

1) We need to be nice to our friends. No hitting, no pushing, no fighting.
2) We need to be nice to animals. No pulling tails, no pushing, no sitting on.
3) We need to be nice to our sisters (they threw this one in)
4) We clear our own dinner plates (which she usually already does)
5) We use our words when we have a problem instead of getting too upset
6) We pick up our toys when we are done playing.

I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a shot. She seemed to really like getting some "rules" that make her a big girl. Violation of the rules will make her two again and she doesn't like that.

Here's to crossing my fingers and hoping it works!

Happy Birthday Moe!

Photo Hunt Saturday - Sweet

This week's photo hunt theme is sweet. I thought about posting pictures of our frequent trips to the ice cream shops this week (or as Moe says, "go get i-crem at the pet shop") but I was too busy eating my ice cream and trying to stay cool that I have no pictures. And while ice cream certainly is sweet, I decided to go with pictures of cakes. The following cakes were my kids birthday cakes. As for their cakes, we try to think outside the box and do original cakes.

I forgot to buy/make her a cake this year and called Husband in tears the night before. He went the next day and found this cake which matched her theme. Funny story is 2 year old Einey insisted her sister wanted a chocolate cake for a month. When we cut into the cake, we found out it was.... chocolate.

Birthday Bash at the Beach

Tomorrow is Meenie's 4th birthday. Today we invited a few friends to meet us at a local lake for some summer fun. While planning this, I never thought it would end up to be the hottest day of the year (so far). Those of you in New England, I don't think I need to tell you how HOT it was today. Those of you not here, it was Freakin' Hot! Around 95 with high humidity. Thankfully up at the lake, it was cooler. Plus you had the water.

Anyway, we arrived and served up cake first. I figured it would be best as I didn't want the pudding to sour. Then we basically hit the water.

Up close of cake

I brought sun hats for the kids to paint, but it was just too hot. So I sent them home with the moms and they can paint them later. I also gave each kid a new pail and shovel, sunblock and swim goggles. There were three families and 15 kids total. One other family had a last minute emergency so they couldn't make it. All in all, it was alot of fun!

That special friend....

The other day, I got a birthday package in the mail from my best friend. My best friend isn't someone I've known since childhood. She isn't a college roommate. Nope. She is my first and very best "mom" friend. When I was pregnant with Einey, Husband was forever pointing out other moms-to-be or telling me about the pregnant women he saw at work. We took a six week birthing course and at the second to last class, Husband points out the new couple in the back of the room and tells me that she's the lady from the mail room at work. Weeks pass and the babies are born and we don't see them again. I convince Husband to pass on our email addy through an acquaintances at work because at that time, a few other moms from that class and I were getting together to take weekly walks. She contacts us and we've been friends since!

Her daughter and mine have been best friends since. And even though there are now miles between us, daughter still talks about her friends as if she sees her alot. Their first move brought them a few states North of us - just a 4 hour drive away. We made that drive about 1/2 dozen times a year or met them in the middle for the day. Their second move brought them further South - about an 9 hour drive. And now their third move has brought them even further South. So now the day trips or weekends away are kind of out, but there are still phone calls, surprise boxes of goodies and pictures by email. And of course, memories from the past.

So this package arrives and she's done it again. She's gotten me a perfect gift without knowing it. In the box, was a set of five red cereal bowls (or very large ice cream bowls) with a cherry on it. Last year, there were five sailboat plates for out frequent outdoor meals. Whats the significance in 5 red bowls? The fact that they match! In my house, my girls have taken to fighting over their dishes. They are constantly arguing over who gets the Darth Vader plate or the My Little Pony cup. They have even gotten to the point when I pull out their dishes, they lick a plate as if to claim it. Or they grab a handful of food as a way of claiming it. I've gotten to the point that I tell them if I hear them asking for a specific plate, they aren't having it and probably won't eat!

To have all the same dishes for all, eliminates that problem! So once again, thanks for the great gift and for knowing exactly what I need!

Happy Birthday Big Sis!

scan0006

Today my big sis turns 30. So in some ways, I'd like to make fun of how old she is now. But then I am reminded that I am only a few short years away from that mark. Growing up, I always thought that 30 was old, like end of life old. Now that I am inching closer to it, I realize 30 is still rather young. People are living longer. And to me, my life still has plenty of time to start. Afterall, I don't have a career, other than motherhood, which I fully embrace.

us

Growing up, my sister was my best friend and worst enemy. I remember spending time with her. I also remember many times where she ditched me as I was a pesky little sister. We shared a few secrets growing up, got into a yelling match in the middle of the school cafeteria, and went out to breakfast way to often when we were supposed to be in school. I think the administrators felt bad for me as I didn't have a choice, afterall, I had to go where my ride went. I never knew why she let me tag along with her to the beach, the amusement park, movies or the dance club. I suppose it was probably because she had to if she wanted to go. Growing up, she was my idol, I wanted to be her.

fdgdf

I was never as cool as she was, as much as I tried to be. But now that I'm older, I realize that that's okay. We kind of completed each other. She was one of the popular girls, I was a bookworm. She was the beauty to my geek. If it wasn't for her, I would have never chosen to go to the highschool I went to (I followed her afterall). And for that I thank her. Because if I didn't I never would have met Husband. Which was at a overnight charity event the school held (which once again, I would probably have been to afraid to do without her). If it wasn't for me, she probably wouldn't have finished high school. Her grades dramatically improved once we were in the same highschool. She actually picked up a book and realized how fun it was to read. Now I am constantly borrowing books from her.

hall

She was the maid of honor at my wedding, an honor I've wanted to reciprocate, but she is still searching for Mister Right. I often dreamed of our kids growing up together, but that dream has not come true either. And while my girls are not lacking for cousins, they don't have a bond with any of them. But Aunty has proven that she can at least spoil them rotten.

Our lives are still very different and for some reason, I feel like I have gotten the easier life. She has worked her butt off since graduating high school and lives not to far away in a townhouse with a roommate. I on the other hand, married my high school sweetheart and finished college. A little while later, the girls came along. I have never held a full time job outside of motherhood because I have never needed to. I remember her telling me she would like to have a child by the time she was 30. Then she would say she wasn't cut out to be a mother. But I know that she would be a great mother, despite her inability to be alone with a child and not freak out.

auntiegirls

Despite our differences, she has always been there for me. She's planned countless showers for me, helped me move twice (remember the time you, Pat and I moved into my house while Husband was working?) and even picked up Husband from work when I was too sick to. And she's never complained once (well not much at least). She drove the distance to come visit Meenie when she was in the hospital, even though she didn't need to (she even volunteered to cut her vacation short to come home sooner despite the fact that there was nothing she could have done).

And although I don't see her as much as I would like to, she is still my best friend.

Happy Birthday Einey!

Five years ago, giving birth was the last thing on my mind. I was looking forward to spending what would be the last Christmas as just a married couple with the Husband, sleeping in and visiting family.

Einey had other plans. She wanted out! Due on January 21st, when I awoke Christmas morning to my water breaking, lets just say, I was in shock and no way ready to be a mom yet. There was too much to do. In fact, I was in denial. I woke up around 8:00 am when my water broke. I went to the bathroom and then crawled back into bed. About 10 minutes later, after realizing what actually happened, I woke Husband up. he felt the need to take a shower and putz around before bringing me to the hospital. My contractions started around 9:30 when we arrived at the hospital. Since my water broke, I was automatically admitted. We spent the day progressing and at 3:47 pm after only 45 minutes of hard labor, a 6 pound 8 ounce, 21 inch long Einey was born. She had to be taken to the NICU for the first 12 hours due to some breathing issues which I believe were due to her being born early. But everything corrected on its own. She was admitted back to the hospital on New Years Eve due to Jaundice. Nursing was not at all what I expected and I only nursed her for 6 weeks. If only I knew back then what I know now!

She has grown so much in these past five years. She is on the small side for her age and the youngest in her kindergarten class, but that doesn't stop her. She is beginning to read and loves to read to me before bed. She is counting and telling time, tying her shoes and getting dressed on her own. There are so many ways that she doesn't need me anyway, but she still loves to take time and snuggle.

She loves taking jazz, tap and ballet lessons as well as playing soccer and swimming. She loves singing and video games. She loves trying new things and isn't afraid of doing things on her own.

Happy Birthday Einey! I hope all your birthdays are full of love and happiness. Keep smiling and don't be afraid to try new things!

Love Mommy!

Two

My baby turns two today. As think back about that day two years ago, I realize that from the start she was not going to be overshadowed by her two big sisters. She was going to make sure we all knew she was around. Right from the start, she dared to be different.

She was breech, so we needed to try to turn her. She wouldn't budge. We were able to deliver her vaginally (thanks to a wonderful doctor who let us try as opposed to the hospital's rule of c-section only for breech babies). 45 hours later (as opposed to 8 hours and 15 minutes respectfully for the other two) she decided to enter the world. Right away, she showed us another difference from her sisters. She took to the breast without any problems. She was a champion nursery from day one! She nursed until almost 10 months old (both her sisters were done by 2 months), when teething interfered with her nursing (her sisters cut there first teeth both at six months, a full 4 months earlier than her).

Sleep however was a different story. For the first three months of her life, she would not sleep unless held in the crook of my arm. At three months, we finally had to improvise. We had her swaddled and snuggled in the boppy pillow in her bed to sleep. Of course, she was still waking up every two hours to eat. At 7 months, we finally stopped swaddling her (she liked it). By 8 1/2 months, I tried getting her to sleep longer through the night without nursing. At 10 months, she finally started to sleep through the night. Her sisters were both sleeping through the night by 2 months. After she stopped waking up at night, I finally realized how clear I could think. It was like this huge fog just lifted. And it was scary. I don't know how I functioned or survived those 10 months with little sleep.

Eating she was okay. She likes to eat anything so I cannot complain there. The only thing is, she is a non-stop eater. She will eat all day if we let her, but she isn't big. She is actually on the small side for her age. She used to be so small but have these big rolls on her thighs, it was so cute. Now she's grown out of the rolls. But she still eats constantly. I swear people think we don't feed her.

She was always an easygoing baby. She was usually very happy and generally a pleasure to be around. Now that she is bigger though, she likes to push the little babies around. We are working on it. I worry that she will be the school yard bully when she is bigger.

She is also one of the only two year old I know with a coffee addiction. It's not my fault, honestly.

When she was born, she came out with bright blue eyes, as opposed to the slate gray that her sisters had. By 6 months they were still very blue. By this age, both her sisters had brown eyes. At two, she still has very gorgeous blue eyes. Both husband and I and both our parents (and my siblings) have brown eyes. For brown-eyed parents to have a blue eyed child, it is a 1/4 chance as it is a double recessive gene. And it also means that we both have to have relatives (somewhere) on both sides. My family likes to joke that she belongs to the mailman.

And terrible twos. My other girls were not nearly as bad as she is. She can have every toy off a shelf in under 30 seconds flat. She has managed to disappear with 4 adults keeping an eye on her and walk close to a road once in under 10 seconds. She loves to pull out all the wipes in a container in under 5 seconds. She is a handful to say the least. I think it is more noticable because she was always such and easygoing child and is now a little terror. Meenie was a handful, but she was a handful right from the start. So her terrible two's were her normal everyday behavior.

She also has a great sense of humor. In the car, her sisters like to tell knock knock jokes. By 15 months, she would sit in the back seat and you would here "knock, knock". If you asked "who's there" she would smile and repeat herself.

At two, she still doesn't talk much (unlike her sisters) but she talks enough so you know what she wants. Her doctor says her speech is average for a two-year old, so at this time, there is no reason for concern. It also doesn't help that she has two other people speaking for her.

She is definitely going to make sure she is noticed and not pushed to the shadows. Happy Birthday to my little monkey! I hope you keep your independent ways no matter what other people think. You may be a handful, but we love you anyway!

Love, Mommy!
